Interceptive orthodontic treatment: Class III Underbite

This 11 year old patient initially presented with a class III skeletal malocclusion (underbite). He naturally occluded on his front incisors in an edge to edge bite due to the retruded position of the maxilla (upper jaw) and the prognathic position of the mandible (lower jaw). As a result of this skeletal discrepancy, the patient would often shift his lower jaw even more forward to avoid a traumatic edge to edge occlusion, which resulted in a more severe underbite and anterior crossbite.

The patient was treated with a PHASE 1 interceptive orthodontic treatment using a facemask protraction orthopaedic appliance, in combination with maxillary expansion and limited upper anterior braces.

Timing was a crucial factor in this patient’s successful treatment. It was important to intervene early before all growth was complete. With excellent cooperation and favorable growth, this patient achieved a fantastic orthopaedic correction and improved smile aesthetics. The patient is now able to bite with his lower teeth fitting comfortably within his upper dental arch. As you can see, he was absolutely thrilled with the results and we could not be happier for him. 😊
