Deep Overbite

July 21, 2020

Parents will often tell me that their child has a large overbite. Sometimes they are referring to overjet, which is the gap between the upper and lower incisors in the horizontal dimension. However, overbite refers to the overlap of the upper and lower incisors in the vertical dimension.

Notice how in the pre-treatment photo, the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors covering almost 100% of the lower teeth. This can be referred to as a deep overbite, which can lead to additional crowding, malocclusion, TMJ discomfort, and excessive wear on the teeth. You can see in the post-treatment photo how the deep bite has been corrected, in addition to the alignment of all teeth.

The patient can now enjoy his beautiful wide smile with a comfortable, well-balanced occlusion for the rest of his life. Awesome!
